Child Protection training 2019 - Amendments to the Child Protection Act – safe care and connection

Guest speaker: Kate Grant, solicitor at ATSILS

This session will explore:

  • The inclusion of legislative principles that recognise the right of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people to self-determination and require the Childrens Court and the chief executive to consider the long-term effect of a decision on identity and connection with family and culture.

  • The incorporation of the Child Placement Principle into the administration of the Act, and the requirements on the chief executive, the DCPL or an authorised officer to comply with the Child Placement Principle when making a significant decision.

  • The role of the Independent Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander Entity (IE) to support the child and family in decision making.

  • The role of the Family Participation Program in independently facilitating an Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Family Led Decision Making process
